So the other day the phone rings and it’s a recording from my town’s Office of Emergency Management.
It scared the crap out of me because:
1) I’ve never rec’d a call from an OEM before – EVER.
2) It was a bright, sunny day, less than a week after 9/11 and I hadn’t had the radio or tv on, so I immediately thought the worst. (My catastrophic thinking serves me well as a writer, not so well in real life.)
The reason that the OEM was calling was to inform me that the deer hunt (which has been discussed and argued over ad nauseum in the local paper) had begun (why they didn’t think to schedule it the day before the hunt began I don’t know). Then they outlined how many hunters were participating, the weapons they can use, the hours they could hunt during, the days they can hunt (I guess killing a deer on Sunday means you go straight to hell since there’s no hunting on Sundays) and how to report a suspicious hunter.
What the town can’t get its shit together to do, is to put a map on the town website telling you WHERE THE HUNT IS, so that residents might have a clue as to where they should steer clear of.
