Writing Can Be Murder

Hatred

Have you ever hated anyone?

I recently had a conversation with an old friend in which she said she’d never hated anyone before. Now we’ve been friends since being partnered in a seventh grade science class, so I know her pretty well, and I believe she’s never hated anyone before, but still it was an unusual notion for me to swallow.

So I’ve been thinking about hatred a lot. People kill because they hate all the time, right?

What I’ve come to realize is that I’ve never, in my fiction, had someone kills someone else because they hated them. I wonder why that is….

Isn’t that interesting?

  1. Fascinating question. I think ‘hatred’ killings tend to be more of the terrorist type, blank minded individuals killing others not because they particular hate a particular person but because they think they’re supposed to hate a group of people and what those people stand for. More often in the news, when I see stories about murders it’s not necessarily hatred that motiviates the killers. Sometimes it’s actually love, fear, convenience – needing to get someone out of the way, or in the case of serial killers, it’s a hobby or an expression of an inner rage that isn’t directed at a particualr victim but at an archetype the victim represents.

Maybe I’ve been watching too much CSI. I sort of feel like Gil Grissom right now, but I tend to think hatred of an individual is actually less often the reason for murder than we think.

  2. I agree!

It’s just that it’s something I’d never really thought about or dissected (yeah, I know, I’m a bit slow sometimes). I wonder why I’ve always had the impression that people murdered out of hate (when they obviously don’t). These are the things that occupy my mind…

  3. I think people are more likely to kill because of love than because of hate.

  4. Hmmm…I would say people kill because of sex or money — the love of each
