Writing Can Be Murder

TV Pilots

I watched two pilots for tv shows this wknd.

I caught the pilot of Criminal Minds. (I watch the show with some regularity but had never seen the actual pilot.) In a word, it was AWKWARD. This is the case with many pilots as the writers try to figure out what the hell they’re doing, the director tries to figure out what the show should look like, and the actors try to find that elusive component called chemistry. Having seen the pilot, I can’t believe the show stayed on the air. I mean, how can you have an episode without Garcia???

I also watched In Plain Sight which was actually one of the better done pilots I’ve seen in a while. The actors had chemistry, the director (who may have been one of the writers, I’ll have to look that up) seemed to have a vision, and the writers managed to surprise me a couple times AND make me laugh out loud. Sure it had its flaws, but I liked it (which is usually the kiss of death, but actually last year I really liked LIFE and Burn Notice and they’re both coming back, so maybe my luck is changing).

  1. I’ll never forget a pilot for a show DH and I went to special screening to see. It was called ‘Blind Men’ and it was about an office full of window-blind salesmen. To this say we still talk about how awful it was.

Apparently everyone else thought so too since it never made it to the air.

  2. Okay, so I was curious and looked it up on IMDB which said this:

“Two pilots of this show were made for US television, one in 1998 for NBC featuring Patrick Warburton and Wallace Shawn, and a second in 2001 for CBS with French Stewart, Sherilyn Fenn and David Threlfall in the cast.”

So WHICH version did you see?

  3. It was the 1998 version. I had no idea they tried again. What were they thinking??

  4. Maybe it was a huge hit in the UK?
