Writing Can Be Murder

When the work doesn’t show up on the page

After completing my rewrite of my last book, I haven’t exactly dived head-first back into my WIP. There are a couple of reasons for this:

1) I’m overwhelmed — there’s a big family deal happening this wknd which is sucking up all my mental and emotional energy

2) I’m tired — because I’m overwhelmed, my insomnia has kicked in, and I’m spending way too much time cleaning, running errands, worrying about what to wear (yes, I really just said that) etc.

So, if you look at my word count, it hasn’t changed much. Which isn’t to say that I’m not working on the story. Last week I steam cleaned all the carpets in my home, with one of my main characters blabbing away beside me. I LOVE this character — hands down he’s my favorite — but he’s not a main character. I wish he’d shut up. But no, as I scrub the kitchen sink, and vaccuum out the clothes dryer, he’s there, begging me to tell his story.

I now know a lot more about him and his interactions with other people in my WIP — I just haven’t gotten around to putting it down on paper yet…

  1. You don’t know how often I’ve wished I could write and clean at the same time! That’s when all the best conversations occur to me. I’ve often thought of buying a small dictaphone and talking as I do housework, but even though I’ve been transcribing for years, I can’t stand to listen to my own voice.

  2. And here I thought the best conversations occur when you’re driving…
