Things that make you go “hmmmm”

(how much would I be dating myself if I said I miss Arsenio Hall?)

I’m not a morning person.

This morning I spent an inordinate amount of time standing in the kitchen going, “Huh?”

It’s the Quaker oatmeal guy’s fault. The front of the container says, “Quick-1 minute” (because there are days, many days in fact, where I can’t be bothered to stand around for 20 minutes making the steel-cut variety).

For some unknown reason, I decided to actually read the preparation instructions. (Yeah, I know, scoop the oats, toss in double the amount of water, heat, stir, and serve. It’s not, as I heard in a movie recently, “rocket surgery”.)

The instructions said to “Cook about 5 minutes”

It’s “quick-1 minute” oatmeal.

That math just doesn’t add up. Does it?

  1. It’s the fault of the sales and marketing team. There’s some sales guy out there who said “I can’t sell five minute oats. Let’s call them ‘Quick-1 minute’ instead. They’ll sell better with that sexier title.”

  2. “1 minute” equals “sexier”??? Never knew that.

I think it was some marketing guy who said, “Let’s screw with some fool’s head first thing in the morning before she’s sucked down her first pot o’ joe”…and I wonder why people call me paranoid…

  3. ROFL. Obviously it must be ‘rocket surgery’. To most people one minute seems like five, so maybe they’re counting on people not really knowing the difference?

  4. I make the 5-minute oatmeal all of the time. I never noticed the 1-minute ad on the front. Let me go look …… nope … says Old Fashioned on the front, then Quick & Easy on the side. That in itself makes me smile. 🙂

  5. Jennifer — Glad I’m not the only one who enjoyed “rocket surgery”! 🙂

Cyndi — Maybe most people aren’t insane enough to read cereal boxes just because they’re bored?
