Familiarity — Blessing or Curse?

The other night we were watching a rerun of CSI:New York and I suddenly blurted out, “I knew it!”

“Knew what?”  Long-suffering DH was only slightly befuddled.

“I knew that Oz directed this episode.”

A few years ago I worked with tv/movie director Oz Scott. Ever since, I’ve become pretty adept at recognizing his work. It’s familiar.

Familiar can be good. Isn’t that why we read multiple books by the same author, or tune into the same tv shows every week? And familiar can be bad. I HATE films directed by Ron Howard so much, that I’ve missed some blockbusters that EVERYONE else has seen, all because I guessed EXACTLY how the last shot of “Ransom” had been shot.

I can often guess what direction a critique partner is going to go in their WIP, because I’m so familiar with their work (and I KNOW they can do the same with mine). The same holds true for favorite writers. I’m not sure if this is a blessing or a curse, what do you think?
