Too bad The West Wing isn’t still on

It occurred to me yesterday, as I was reading my voting ballot, that Aaron Sorkin could have had a ball with the following:

1) Why are the “Interpretive Statements” for the Public Questions longer  than the questions they’re supposed to be interpreting?

2) Why are the Democrats running a Senator who is 84? That’s not a typo. The man is 84.  His birthday is in January, so really, he’ll be 85 when/if he gets sworn in again. It’s a six year term. You do the math.

I’ll be speed dating this wknd

or in other words, I’ll be pitching my novel.

But seriously, when you walk into that room with all of your potential “dates” and everyone starts chattering at once, trying to make themselves sound interesting and unique before their time runs out, it really does look like speed dating.

On a more positive note, my fab friend Jen is my roommate — which is great for many, many reasons — not the least of which is the fact she doesn’t drink coffee so I get the entire pot to myself –cue evil laughter.

Last year at this same conference I managed to firmly wedge my foot in my foul mouth — can’t wait to see what I screw up this year….

The most emotional writing I did today

was to the radio station which once again played, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”.

I told them that I’d changed my car and home radio pre-sets to that of their competitors and that I hope their advertisers appreciate them shoving Xmas for three months because their listeners don’t. (Can you tell this is a pet peeve of mine? lol)

What other lives would you like to lead?

As a fiction writer, we spend lots of our time living other lives, whether we’re cropdusters, detectives, people falling in love, serial killers, or aliens. Today I’ve been thinking about what other lives I’d like to lead in real life.

We had company over for lunch this wknd, someone who I’d never cooked for before, and she said, “You could be a chef” and then emailed a thank you note saying, “I felt like I ate in a fancy restaurant”.  I love to cook and I’m good at it, so yes, I’d like to be a chef. (not a pastry chef or a baker though because I hate to measure)

I’d like to be a nature photographer too. Unfortunately, I’m not so good at that, but I’d like to be.

And a singer. I’d like to be a “studio only” singer. I’d be content to do jingles.

All those occupations interest me, and yet, I realize I’ve never even had one of my characters attempt any of them. Do your characters lead the other lives you’d like to live?

Santa ruined my wknd

I know what you’re thinking, “Santa? It’s only mid-October.”

and you’re right, BUT apparently no one bothered to tell a certain radio station that, and they played, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” on Friday. (The Springsteen version, cuz ya know that nothing says Holiday Season like a screamin’ Springsteen.)

I would like one of the Presidential candidates to add, “I’ll outlaw Christmas crap except btwn the end of the Thanksgiving Day parade and New Year’s Eve” (see I’m not a total Grinch, that allows well over a month for “celebrating”) to their platforms. They’d get my vote.

Hamsters beware! — ABC will remake V

Really? Why? (because the remake of Battlestar Galactica did so well, dummy!)

If you want to remake an 80s sci-fi show, I’d vote for Alien Nation. (which was of course a remake of a movie…)

Ya know that someone will be sporting that bumper sticker. (wink, wink)
