Writing Can Be Murder

After an inspiring brainstorming session with my amazing crit partner C, I dove back into the revisions of my thriller. I wrote a brand new opening.  (This was a HUGE breakthrough since I actually really like my original opening…well it’s not really the “original” as much as it’s the “same” scene I’ve started with in all the other versions of this book…but once again I’m digressing — sorry!)

The new opening is scary. Now that I’m back into the frightened head of my protagonist, every time Long Suffering showed up unexpectedly from around a corner last night I’d gasp and clutch at my chest. This is the problem with writing a suspense novel. I scare the shit out of myself with every draft. Chances are good I’ll start sleepwalking again any night now….

  1. Kudos! Changing an opening scene is tough – it’s usually the part we’re the most married to because we’ve read it so often. That’s a big step. Good luck! [And try putting a mirror on your desk so you can see who’s sneaking up behind you while you work.] LOL.

  2. Thanks! You’re absolutely right. I was SO enamored with that starting scene, it was difficult to break up with it.

I can’t use the mirror trick because I might catch my own reflection and that would TERRIFY me, lol.
