Writing Can Be Murder

What other lives would you like to lead?

As a fiction writer, we spend lots of our time living other lives, whether we’re cropdusters, detectives, people falling in love, serial killers, or aliens. Today I’ve been thinking about what other lives I’d like to lead in real life.

We had company over for lunch this wknd, someone who I’d never cooked for before, and she said, “You could be a chef” and then emailed a thank you note saying, “I felt like I ate in a fancy restaurant”.  I love to cook and I’m good at it, so yes, I’d like to be a chef. (not a pastry chef or a baker though because I hate to measure)

I’d like to be a nature photographer too. Unfortunately, I’m not so good at that, but I’d like to be.

And a singer. I’d like to be a “studio only” singer. I’d be content to do jingles.

All those occupations interest me, and yet, I realize I’ve never even had one of my characters attempt any of them. Do your characters lead the other lives you’d like to live?

  1. I’d like to be a restaurant reviewer. That’s my dream job! Besides that – I’ve considered federal agent, private detective, international spy, starship captain, spaceship mechanic [they seem to have all the fun], xenobilogist. My characters have gotten to do a lot of that stuff, but none of them have ever been a restuarant reviewer.

  2. Ooooh, I like the idea of restaurant reviewer too. I’ll add that one to my list.

Maybe you could write about an international spy who goes undercover as a restaurant reviewer?
