Gift wrapped crap

This year I’m trying to get my family to make up Amazon Wish Lists — thus insuring that we won’t give or get crap that no one wants. I’ve had mixed results, because…I dunno…because people actually want to be surprised by useless crap?

Yesterday Paperback Writer posted a list of the Top 10 Things she doesn’t want this year. http://pbackwriter.blogspot.com/

In that spirit, here’s my short list:

1) Cookbooks — Yes, I enjoy cooking, BUT here’s the thing. I don’t use cookbooks.

2) Kitchen gadgets/appliances — I’ve got limited space. I’ve asked for what I want.

3) Anything sold by As Seen On TV (or any other infomercials)

4) Jewelry — I’m sorry, it’s pretty and all, but I’m just not going to get around to wearing it.

5) Clothing with stripes, or polka dots, or plaid, or any pattern at all, thank you very much. Also, I really hate orange, yellow and green clothing.

6) Books (unless they’re the ones on my Wish List) I know that sounds strange, but I’m tired of people giving me books they think I “should” read. I’d be thrilled to receive a gift card to a bookstore though.

7) Linens. I have plenty of sheets, towels, tablecloths and napkins. Really.

So what about you? What tops your list of things you don’t want?

  1. Hmm….

    1) Yet another gift card for a store I don’t like (The Gab, American Eagle, etc.) from my great aunt. She almost gets my sister and I gift cards for places where that $35 buys you a pair and a half of thin little socks. Last year she did well though – Big thick housecoat and matching slippers from La Senza. =)

    2) Jewelery. I rarely get it, but I just as rarely wear it. On a regular basis, I wear (maybe) one necklace, one bracelet (My MedID bracelet), and my watch. The other two-dozen-odd pieces of jewelery I own get no use.

    3) An IPod. As sad as it is, this is because I don’t want to conform – Seems like almost anyone who has an mp3 player has an IPod, and it sickens me on a strange level that I don’t even understand. NOBODY competes with IPod. I have a little thumb-drive-like thing that works just fine for me. Even more sad? The Zune (or something like that) is almost identical, and I’d be fine with getting one of those.

    4) Basically anything related to one of my past hobbies or interests. Those were phases. I don’t need that stuff anymore.

    5) The Twilight Series. I have heard mixed reviews about it, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’ll be much too young for my taste. And that Edward Cullen will get on my nerves more than in my heart.

I think that’s most of it…. Can’t really think of what I want, let alone what I don’t want. Money tops the list for wants, basically (I know its impersonal, but I’m a student! I need money!). Normally Chapters Gift Cards would be high up there, but I have more bought-and-not-yet-read books than I know what to do with, and no time to read them. Though I could buy music… HMV is desirable as well. I do CDs, not downloads, ’cause I don’t trust the websites, and if you just download songs you want then you don’t discover new songs

Oh, and stuff for my baby, AKA my car. Or, for that matter, stuff for my baby, AKA my boyfriend. I’m all about giving.

  3. I don’t want video games. [My husband and kids of course LOVE them and are always trying to get me into the act, so heaven help me if I mention a game looks ‘cool’ – they’re thrilled to buy it for me. Nine times out of ten I will play it once, realize it’s not as cool as it looks and then it collects dust forever.

I also don’t need any more dust collectors. I love to look at statues and figurines as much as the next person, but I’m all out of places to put them.

  4. Jennifer — you must make a mental note to never, ever again say a game looks cool

Maybe you should ask for someone to dust your collectibles?
