Writing Can Be Murder

When firemen knock on your door

in the middle of a snowstorm, and ask if they can look around, these three thoughts come to mind.

1)Thank goodness I cleaned today. All the laundry is put away, and there are no dishes in the sink. Oh no! They’re gonna tramp soot all over my white carpet.

2) Crap! Why didn’t I email myself the work I did today? If this place burns down all those brilliant (hahaha) words will be lost forever. And that’s a bad thing?

3) Wallet. Check. Cell phone. Check. Dog. Check. Bird — uh oh, if I take the bird outside he’ll freeze, but if I leave him behind he’ll be fried.

What would you worry about if firemen knocked on your door?

  1. I would worry about my pets. Of course about my writing, but about pets first, which there are scattered about the house. The dog is easy enough because she’s in the bedroom with me. But I swear I’d go down WITH my house trying to find the cats and get them out, too.

    • Yeah, pets are awfully high on my list. I guess I should say that DH is pretty high on the list too — it’s just that he wasn’t home at the time.
      😉

  2. My favorite fireman story:

Firefighters give a presentation on fire safety to some 2nd graders. First question to the kids… WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOUR JEANS ARE ON FIRE?
Little Jeff immediately says… WEAR SOMETHING ELSE! 🙂

  3. My first worry would be my computer files. At least 50% of my life is saved on my computer – Three and a half years of photos, four years of poetry and novel work, four and a half years of education… Hence why I’m slowly saving everything on CDs. And I fully intend to invest in a firebox for them.

My next concern would be my books. So many beauties…. The thought of them burning…. *sobs* I should stick a few favourites in that fire box… Heck, I should stick a list of the ones I have in that firebox. So I can replace them.

Though to be fair, that’s my concerns for a fire. My concerns for firemen would basically amount to “WTF?”

    • Hmmm…I wouldn’t give a second thought to books — except a book my friend Cyndi gave me which was my FAVORITE book when I was a kid and she managed to track down a used copy for me. I’d like to save that one.

  4. So you’re saying firemen knocked on your door? What happened?

I would worry about how to get all the pets outside with only one cat carrier. I suppose I could put the fish in some Tupperware. And I’d probably swipe my jump drive on the way out.

    • Firemen knocked on the door. Freaked the dog out. Smoke alarms were going off in a number of units in my building, but no smoke or fire was found.
