What “Watch out” means

So this is what I was pondering when I almost ruined Long Suffering’s prized collection this morning.

When taking the vacuum out of the closet I told the dog, “Watch out” by which I meant “Get the hell out of the way” but which he seemed to take as, “Run for your life!”

Planes, buses and automobiles

I love to write in them all. What is it about being in a moving vehicle that gets the creative juices pumping?

I’m excited that tomorrow the temperature is predicted to climb above freezing. It might even hit 40 on Friday! Woo hoo!

Then the arctic chill will return coverting my world into an icy tundra. I really dislike winter…

Call me a cynic

but shouldn’t we just all be calling our new President, Mr. Miracle Worker?

I really don’t understand the fervor that has surrounded this inauguration. I understand the desire for change. I understand the need for hope.

What I don’t quite understand is this zealous blind faith the media seems intent on exploiting.

I worry that unrealistic expectations will mount during these first 100 days. Then again, I’m a cynic.

The place is too clean

When the DH basically says in a gentle teasing/mocking/nudging way that the house is too clean (after catching me scrubbing the cabinet doors in the kitchen) it’s a sure sign I’m procrastinating about writing. ((sigh))

Jennifer Colgan wrote a great blog post within the past week about how her goal for the new year is to enjoy writing again, to recapture some of the magic. It’s a brilliant goal.

Similarities btwn crocheting and writing

I decided to learn to crochet this fall, and I’ve now completed a few projects: A big blanket that didn’t turn out to be rectangular, a bunch of scarves which ended up being the approximate correct shape, and a small blanket, which I morphed into a pillow cover.

I’ve decided that “hooking” is a lot like writing.

There are days when it goes well. There are times when every-single-solitary stitch looks wrong — just like every word is wrong.

On many occassions I begin muttering (or swearing, it depends on my frustration level) and start ripping the work apart. For a crocheted piece that can mean removing whole rows, for writing I take out whole chapters.

Then there are the times when a stitch is not quite right, it’s not glaringly “wrong” it’s just not perfect, and I decide to leave it in. Sort of like a line of dialogue in writing.

I’ve learned a lot about writing while crocheting. I learned I’m even more impatient than I realized. I’m reminded time and again that I’m a REALLY harsh critic (why am I expecting perfection from a skill that was learned less than four months ago?)

I’ve learned that sometimes it’s just got to be good enough — otherwise I’ll never finish anything.
