Writing Can Be Murder

Too much, too soon?

I love, love, love the first scene of my book. It’s dark. It’s disturbing. It’s scary. It’s everything I want it to be.

And I’m worried it’s too much. What if it’s too dark and people never read past the first page? What if it’s a major turn-off for the great majority?

I’ve got an ongoing debate raging in my head:

“You should soften it”
“But it’s great.”
“People are having REALLY strong reactions to it.”
“Because it’s good.”
“Because it’s gross.”
“But I love it.”
“Sometimes you have to kill what you love.”

It goes on and on and on and on and…

  1. If you think it’s good, submit it. Controversey sells books. Push the envelope. Damn the torpedoes.

    • Jen — Now I have to go look up why people say that about torpedoes…

    • According to Batrleby’s: “An exclamation by David Farragut, an officer in the Union navy in the Civil War. Warned of mines, called torpedoes, in the water ahead, Farragut said, “Damn the torpedoes! Captain Drayton, go ahead! Jouett, full speed!””

  2. I’ve read it. Leave it alone.
