Writing Can Be Murder

I’m boldly going …

but I WISH I got to go where Allison Brennan goes.  Check out her latest post on www.murdershewrites.com

A “shooting victim” during a SWAT exercise? What could be cooler than that?

Oh yeah, going to Quantico…which she’s doing soon too.

Is my jealousy showing?

Obsession

(NOT by Calvin Klein)

This week I’ve been obsessing about obsessions (well, those and goat cheese…I’m really into goat cheese at the moment) and wondering if it’s  possible to have a positive obsession.

I know someone who is obsessed. She manages to turn every conversation, whether it’s about baseball, housing, or a local bank, into a discussion (albeit a rather one-sided discussion) about her obsession. It’s beyond annoying, and I often whether she knows or cares that it adversely affects her relationships.

And then there’s Madonna’s arms. Have you seen the pictures? Ewwww. I’m no shrink, but I’d be willing to bet she’s got some serious BDD going on.

And then there’s music. I’ve been obsessed with “I Gotta Feeling” tonight’s gonna be a good night, tonight’s gonna be a good, good night,  but now I fear that Escape (the pina colada song) is stuck in my head.

And then there’s my WIP. I’ve been obsessing over it, but not making much headway and I’m frustrated beyond belief.

And then there’s my running. I’m obsessed with what the weather forecast will be for Monday because if I have to run my scheduled five miles inside, I’ll never make it. (Yesterday’s thirty minutes on the treadmill convinced me of that.)

So what are YOU obsessed with? Do you have any positive obsessions?

Cranes

I’m pretty sure cranes are supposed to be good luck (at least I think the origami ones are) so I took it as a good omen that I saw two yesterday on my run/walk.

Because here’s the thing: I’ve NEVER seen cranes in this section of NJ before. (Long Suffering saw a bear lumbering across our street on Sunday and while that was unusual, it didn’t surprise me. I see deer daily, the occassional sly fox, and I’ve been known to waste way too much time watching hawks glide in the air.)

So the sighting of the cranes, coupled with the fact I’ve signed with an agent and my novel’s going out on submission, led me to believe they were a good omen.

I’m delusional that way….

Learning from disappointments

Things are going really well right now. I’m having more successes than failures, but recently I’ve found myself wondering if the reason I’m being more successful at the moment is because of past disappointments.

I’m not one of those that believes that “every cloud has a silver lining”. I think that there are things that happen that just suck. They’re disappointing. They hurt. They make you feel like the entire world is conspiring against you.  At those times the only silver lining I can imagine finding in a cloud would be a lightning bolt that’s gonna fry me.

It takes time for me to step back and realize the lessons those disappointments might offer. And I’m a slow learner, so sometimes I have to repeat my failures multiple times before I ever internalize the lessons and change my behaviors.

What about you? Do you feel like you learn/grow more as a result of your successes or your failures?

ORMEN

I spent way too much time (more than 5 seconds would have been too much) wondering about the license plate I saw this morning.

ORMEN

on a plate that supports the ASPCA or something, so there was a picture of a cat and dog followed by ORMEN.

So I wondered if the driver had decided that she could either have pets or dates.

She drove a red bug, with fuzzy black and pink dice hanging off the mirror, and a stupid purple Mickey Mouse head stuck on top of the antenna. So then I thought maybe she decided it was her car or men (cuz what self-respecting  guy would be caught riding in that car?)

Or maybe ORMEN is her name.

Or maybe she’s praisng noodles and it’s short for “Oh Ramen!”

Running from my villain

I’m trying to become a runner (okay, I’ll wait until you’re done laughing to continue)

…waiting….

….waiting…

…..still waiting…

Oh enough already! It’s not THAT funny.

So yesterday I was in the state park where I do my long walks/runs/shuffling and I decided that for my “run” intervals I’d pretend that my villain from my WIP  was chasing me, and when it was time to walk, I’d pretend I’d given him the slip.

(Can you tell I spent a lot of time playing by myself as a child?)

My villain scares me so I actually improved the time on my running intervals — Behold the power of visualization!

Just as importantly I realized that although I’ve been resisting it (duh, if you’re resisting it, you probably should be doing it, doofus) I need to use the villain’s POV.

So I’m happy to report that today I’ll be rolling around in the head of a serial killer –rubs hands together with glee!–

Do you interact with characters while doing day-to-day stuff?

Mo. jail to host ‘bed and breakfast’ event

AP

Wed Jul 15, 4:07 pm ET

HILLSBORO, Mo. – Want to spend a night in jail? And how about paying for the privilege? The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department in eastern Missouri has come up with a novel way to pay for mattresses at a new jail addition.

Officials are offering the public a chance to stay overnight on July 31 at the recently finished addition. For $50 a person or $90 a couple, people can tour the new facility, learn more about jail, and stay overnight. They’ll receive Jefferson County “bed and breakfast” T-shirts, snacks — and souvenir mug shots.

Also included is a “get out of jail free” card. Those who want to leave early have to give another $10. Proceeds benefit the county’s jail maintenance fund.

If it’s gonna kill you — do it in a cemetery

Distance runners do these drills called “hill repeats” where they run up a hill, turn around, jog/walk back to the bottom, turn around, repeat — again and again and again. My marathoning pal Paula calls them her “killer” workout.

Imagine my amusement as this morning, as I did my endless loops around the lake, I watched a runner doing his hill repeats in the cemetery across the street. He’d race up the hill btwn the gravestones, and then trot back down. I couldn’t help wonder what would happen if he collapsed — after all, it’s not exactly a high traffic area…

I admit it — I’m an addict

I was going to title this post “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” but then I decided I should just come out and say it.

I am addicted to paper.

The reason I think it’s the most wonderful time of the year is that I spotted my first ad for discounted school supplies. It is now officially time to feed my addiction.

I do a lot (okay, most) of my writing by hand, so now it’s time to stock up. (Guilt-free since they’re on sale — well guilt-free except for the poor trees I’m sending to their deaths…)

It’s time to feed my need for single subject notebooks, legal pads (white, not yellow — or even purple, which look cool, but are difficult to read, and I have enough problems deciphering my handwriting) and little memo pads (to keep in my purse, for those inopportune times when brilliance strikes when I’m not at home).

Okay, now you know my horrible secret — put me near school supplies and I’m like a kid in a candy store.

What about you? What are YOU “addicted” to?

You can’t judge a book by its movie,

but now they want you to judge a tv series by its book.

ABC is going to publish a book by “Richard Castle” that’s supposedly written by the main character of its show CASTLE.

Like there haven’t been enough comparisons btwn this show and Murder She Wrote?
