The Body Bag in the Garage

So there’s been a body bag in the garage of my building for two days now. It’s killing me.

Okay, maybe it’s not a real body bag, but it is a black, zippered closed, shiny plastic and big enough to hold a body. I’m pretty sure there’s gym equipment in it…maybe stuff for lacrosse or hocky.

I’m pretty sure…then again, it IS right next to the incinerator room.

Have I mentioned not peeking inside is killing me?

Castle’s Stunt Casting

I watched the season premiere of Castle last night with mixed feelings. I want to love this show, but I don’t. It hasn’t found its stride yet.

It’s got a lot to like though. Susan Sullivan is divine (PLEASE give her more to do) as is the girl who play’s Castle’s daughter. Nathan Fillion is always watchable (although I sometimes feel as though the success of an entire episode rests on how high his charm wattage is cranked) and their stunt casting thrills me. Last night Richard Castle played poke with Michael Connelly — yes, THE Michael Connelly! — and Stephen J. Cannell.

What I wouldn’t give to be the dealer in that room!

Now that’s a happy thought

My first thought of the day was, “Four weeks from today and you’ll have completed the half-marathon.”

With any luck I’ll have completed a book too.

Office of Emergency Management

So the other day the phone rings and it’s a recording from my town’s Office of Emergency Management.

It scared the crap out of me because:

1) I’ve never rec’d a call from an OEM before – EVER.

2) It was a bright, sunny day, less than a week after 9/11 and I hadn’t had the radio or tv on, so I immediately thought the worst. (My catastrophic thinking serves me well as a writer, not so well in real life.)

The reason that the OEM was calling was to inform me that the deer hunt (which has been discussed and argued over ad nauseum in the local paper) had begun (why they didn’t think to schedule it the day before the hunt began I don’t know). Then they outlined how many hunters were participating, the weapons they can use, the hours they could hunt during, the days they can hunt (I guess killing a deer on Sunday means you go straight to hell since there’s no hunting on Sundays) and how to report a suspicious hunter.

What the town can’t get its shit together to do, is to put a map on the town website telling you WHERE THE HUNT IS, so that residents might have a clue as to where they should steer clear of.

And now I’ve recovered

Okay, so I took my shower and I had my pot of coffee and a pineapple greek yogurt (I LUV greek yogurt) with some coconut and almonds and I’m all better. (except for the fact that my left foot is KILLING me and I’m tired — which is a huge improvement over my earlier exhaustion — never underestimate the power of a shower!)

My life is no longer crap. In fact, it’s pretty damn good, so what was I bellyaching about?

Just read over yesterday’s pages and they’re pretty damn good too. Time to get to work.

Reserves…not having them

Never, ever open an email from your agent after having returned from an eight miler (woo hoo! I was scheduled for an “easy” week — “ONLY” eight miles today) before taking a shower, brewing a pot of coffee, and eating something.

Otherwise you’ll feel like your day is ruined and your life is crap. (Trust me on this one.)

Oh good…I think I hear the coffee maker finishing….I’ll feel better in five minutes!

My insomnia has kicked in ((sigh)). My diet is right. I’m curtailing my caffeine (no really, I am!) and I’m getting plenty of exercise. I know exactly what caused this current bout of sleeplessness.

My insomnia reared its ugly head the moment I started working on this manuscript again.

I’m obsessed with it — which is good, because I’ve got to believe that this intensity will result in a superior work, and it’s bad, because I need sleep. Desperately.

Last night I got out of bed (because that’s what they say you should do) and tried some meditation, but I couldn’t focus because my thoughts kept drifting (drifting is too gentle a word) my thoughts kept getting YANKED back to this story. It’s all I can think about. Aaaahhhh!

Black and blue, and strewn all over

Yup, that’s my manuscript. At this point it looks like I’ve scrawled a lot more on the pages than is typed. Yikes! But it’s okay because I LOVE this book!!!

Did hill repeats in the rain yesterday. According to my heart rate monitor I was dead. (It worked at the beginning of the workout, but then it totally lost my pulse. I really don’t think my heart rate was “00” — at least I hope not.

10 miles!

I did ten miles today — woo hoo! 3.1 more and I would have done a half marathon, lol. I celebrated with a Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream bar because I was starving and the little snack shack at the park was right there.

In other news: I’ve lost my mind (okay, that’s not news). Yesterday I literally hugged and kissed a manuscript. Not the WIP (that one I cursed and then ignored) but another that I’d shelved for a long time. I love the characters! I love the story! I love this book!

Little House on the Prairie: The Musical

Shhh…don’t tell anyone, but when I was growing up Laura Ingalls Wilder was one of my best friends. (didn’t matter if it was her literary persona or her television character, I liked ’em both)

And now there’s a new Little House on the Prairie! A musical starring…wait for it…Melissa Gilbert as Ma (geez, we’re all getting old). http://littlehousethemusical.com/

Rachel Sheinkin (who I had the pleasure of meeting a few years ago, not long after she won her Tony for best book of a musical for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, when we were each workshopping a project at a Theater Center) wrote the book for this new telling.

Once again I’m entertaining the fantasy that someone will call ME Half Pint…
