Writing Can Be Murder

It’s a big number day today (at least for me it is, one of those, “Holy crap it’s blankety-blank!”).

I’m pretty focused on numbers at the moment. How many words a day I’m writing or how far, in how long, I’m running. (Yesterday as I ran up and down the same hill for 30 minutes I spent most of my time worrying about what number my heart rate was at.)

Numbers are magical because they measure our successes or failures. Whether you’re a writer who’s just completed your tenth book, been offered a million dollar advance (okay, that’s just delusional, but you get the idea) or received your hundredth rejection letter, you care about numbers.

The same applies to runners whether they’re finishing their first 5k or training for their fifth Boston Marathon.

Numbers help us to quantify our progress (or lack of).

What numbers do you keep track of?

Oh, and speaking of tracking numbers: 2572 words yesterday.

  1. I like to keep track of the numbers in my checking account. Though they often disappoint me.
