The Training Log and other great discoveries

Best discovery of 2009? A training log.

I used one for my half-marathon training and it served as a task-master, cheerleader, remote memory, and coach.

So this year I’ll be using a Planner as my writing training log. I just filled in my writing appointments for the first two months of the year. Ambitious goals…perhaps unattainable. Then again that’s what I thought when I embarked on my half-marathon adventure. Oh, and because I’m doing another half-marathon in May, I’ll be filling out my actual training log for that.

Honorable mentions go to:

My friends — they’re awesome. Not a new discovery but something I’m reminded of again and again.

Bananagrams — I’ve already elaborated on the addictive game

Minute Ready to Serve Brown and Wild Rice — throw the plastic cup into the microwave and voila! a minute later the rice is done.

Jarred Pesto — It’s sort of like cheese in that it makes everything better. Just used it in turkey burgers.

Reynolds Wrap Easy Release Non-Stick Foil — It doesn’t stick to roast chicken, lasagna, or anything else with a cheesy/sticky surface — great stuff

Half Marathon — an awesome, damn near spiritual, life-changing experience

My musical keyboard — I still suck, but I’m having fun trying to play it

Amazon Wish Lists — I love getting someone something they actually want. I like getting stuff I want (the planner, the training log, and the bananagrams were all gifts given to me (thanks J&J!) because they were on my wish list) and you can’t beat the ease of Amazon.

So what about you? Did you make any grand discoveries this year?

New Year — New Goals?

It’s that time of year again if you’re a resolution maker.
I like listing goals at the beginning of the year. I check in on them again for my birthday in March and mid-summer when I say, “Holy Crap half the year is gone.”

At the end of the year I take stock of what I’ve accomplished — usually most of this list is directly linked to my beginning of the year goals, which is why I’m a believer in making the list in the first place.

Some years my goals are simple, others more ambitious. Sometimes they’re broken down by category: writing, health, relationships, home, etc. Sometimes they’re broken down by carefully crafted timelines (note to self — this method doesn’t usually work — life always has other plans).

I already announced on an earlier post that I want to read more classics in 2010. I’ll post other goals soon, but I’m interested in what your goals for 2010 might be.

(But be warned I’m gonna bitch slap the first person who says, “I resolve not to make any resolutions.”

Awesomest copy everrrrrrrr

I bought a flashing red light at the Dollar Store just because the advertising copy on the packaging had me in hysterics. And I quote:

“Safety Warning Flashing Lamp — Suitable for: Bicycle, Jogging, Climbing, Baby-Car, Disable-Car, Especially for the children, Blind Men, Old Men, in the morning or evening, and the cloudy day, when the bright is not enough, to increase more safety.”

Bananagrams is Scrabble on crack!

We’re snowed in so we’ve gotten to indulge our passion for games this wknd.

I have a new addiction: Bananagrams!

Even though Long Suffering has won more matches, this fast-paced word game is my new favorite. (thanks J&J!)

The letter tiles remind me of Scrabble (which we also played this wknd — two 7 letter words and the “z” doubled in a triple-word netted me over 400 points today! — I’m not telling about the two games I lost) but there’s no board, and no score-keeping. So it’s like Scrabble, but on crack!

Highly addictive!

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

Finished this fascinating book a few weeks ago and it’s still rattling around in my mind. The material was interesting and presented in Gladwell’s incomparable style (I’m a fan of his Blink and The Tipping Point too) but overall I was left feeling sort of depressed by the role of “luck” in success.

Rearranging furniture and rewriting

I’ve spent a good amount of time in the past two weeks rearranging furniture. It’s interesting how you can keep the same exact pieces in a room, but once their position is changed, the room, while still familiar, has a whole new feel.

The same can be said of rewriting. You can keep the same characters, dialogue and scenes, but once you move them around, a story gains a fresh perspective.

That’s right isn’t it? Or did I bang my head on one too many times?
