Dog training / People training

This past wknd it was suggested to me that I take up dog training by people who had never before met the Dog of Death. The Dog of Death is a good dog, not perfect, but he’s pretty well-trained after four years (he was five when we adopted him).

I wouldn’t mind training dogs.

I would mind training people.

Because here’s the thing…training a dog is probably 25 percent of the equation…training a dog’s owners is the bigger/tougher part of the equation.

A dog is pretty simple…good/bad…positive reinforcement…the occassional bit of food/treat…repetition…consistency…and they’ll adapt pretty quickly.

People on the other hand resist change. (By the way I top the list of untrainable people…I try and try, but I’m not particularly successful.) We’re just as distractable, if not more, than dogs.

  1. My dog has me trained – every time I walk by the pantry, I must give him a treat from his treat box. At 4:00 PM every day he asks for [or rather demands] his dinner. I could use some training in how to resist his Jedi mind tricks.

  3. But if I say no…he cries. And then I feel bad.
