Writing Can Be Murder

A struggle vs A challenge

Tuesday morning, having not slept well the night before, I went for a run. I did a half mile warm-up walk and jogged half a mile. And then I quit because it was a struggle. Something was really off. Everything was difficult.

A couple hours I tried again. Again I quit after a mile.

There was a time when I would have been extraordinarily frustrated with myself for quitting, but I’ve learned (slowly and sometimes painfully) that pushing through when I’m struggling usually leads to injury and/or burnout. So I cut myself some slack, and reminded myself I could always try again the next day.

Wednesday I put on my sneakers and tried again. Everything I worked. I did my four miles. I even set a new personal record for my fastest mile. It was a CHALLENGE to go faster and get through the workout, but it wasn’t a struggle.

Yesterday writing was a struggle. A gnashing of teeth and rending of hair epic struggle. I was fed up with the WIP. I was never, ever, going to finish it. I was ready to just hit delete and be done with it.

(Not TOO over the top am I?)

Thankfully my dear friend C, in her gentle, wise way, reminded me that the book is not a catastrophic failure.

I took a break. I worked on my other project which always fills me with joy. It wasn’t until a few hours later that the whole struggle vs. challenge thing occurred to me. I’d been struggling with the WIP and should have just quit for the day, but instead I kept trying to push through. It didn’t work. Things just got worse and worse.

Once I allowed myself a breather, I was once again up to the challenge of working on it. I may not have set any kind of personal record with it, but I did finally make progress.

I need to figure out how to internalize the struggle vs. challenge lesson and would appreciate any tips anyone has about this issue.

Reading and Watching Wednesday 1/27/10

This week I didn’t read or watch anything of note.

I tried reading John Updike’s THE WIDOWS OF EASTWICK, but couldn’t get into it.

Viewing wasn’t much better. Most nights I watch a 10pm show to unwind (I crochet at the same time so it’s not as though I’m riveted by any of the programming) Monday: Castle, Tuesday: White Collar, Wednesday: Leverage…wow, typing up that list I realized that there’s nothing to tune into on Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. No wonder Dexter on dvd has been the choice for the past few weekends.

Oh and on Tuesdays I like to have NCIS: Los Angeles on in the background as I type up the days changes. I’m holding out hope that this show is going to improve with age. If nothing else, the end of last night’s episode surprised me, which is a rare occurrence.

Did you read or watch anything interesting? Anything? Anything?

What’s cookin Tuesday — 1/26/10

Since I didn’t make anything interesting this week (besides the cake) I’ve decided to share the recipe of something I made.

Keep in mind that I don’t measure, so consider everthing to be “ish”

Barbecue Meatloaf

A pound or so of ground chicken or turkey (if you use beef, it will probably be juicier so you might want to cut back on the bbq sauce)

1/2 cup bread crumbs

1 egg

2/3 cup frozen chopped onions (obviously fresh will work too, but I find these to be a huge time saver and I don’t shed a tear)

1/3 cup barbecue sauce

1/2 tbsp chili powder
(I have a deep and abiding love for chili powder. If you don’t, you could probably sub a tsp of black pepper or garlic powder)

Plop it in a loaf pan (coated with cooking spray)

Spread another 1/3 cup (or more if it needs it) bbq sauce over the top

Bake at 350 for one hour

Plans for the week of 1/25/10

Forgot to post this yesterday

I should probably send my agent the revised chapters of my novel, but I probably won’t. I’m having too much fun with it at the moment and don’t want my bubble burst. So I’m going to keep working on the WIP.

I’m subbing a piece of flash fiction this week that I absolutely adore.

I’ve got my usual three runs scheduled for the week. For some reason both my back and my left knee are causing me pain, so I’m not holding out too much hope for good runs.

Three weeks done for 2010

I have to say I had an awesome week full of firsts for me.

Note that I didn’t say the “firsts” were awesome.

Tuesday — I ran for a mile straight. For the first time. Ever.
(In October I did a combo of walking and running for the 13.1 mile marathon, so it wasn’t the distance that was a big deal for me, but the fact I didn’t need a walk break.)

Thursday — I ran for two miles straight. For the first time. Ever.

Thursday I also got uber-excited because I finally, finally, finally nailed the plot of my WIP (suspense/mysteries are tricky beasts imho).

Friday — I baked a cake. From scratch. For the first time. Ever.
(and omg it was so good that I may banish cake mixes forever)

Saturday — I ran a mile straight of hill repeats. For the first time. Ever.
(this on a hill I’d never managed to run all the way up before. Saturday I ran up and down three whole times — it’s a pretty steep hill and a decent size considering three laps equalled a mile)

Now I KNOW that none of these is an awesome accomplishment, but damn they felt good!

The Cake

Bake two layers of chocolate cake (HUGE thanks to Kate Perry for her waxed paper tip — of course I didn’t have waxed paper, so I used parchment for the same effect)

Top one layer with strawberries and chocolate sauce

Cover it in homemade whipped cream

Cover that with the second layer of cake

Top that with bananas and raspberry sauce

Smother the whole thing in more whipped cream

Drizzle extra chocolate and raspberry sauce on top. Add some strawberries.

Cake anxiety

Dammit Jim, I’m a cook, not a baker.

Today’s the big day. I’m going to attempt to bake a cake from scratch.

(but to cover my ass I also bought a mix yesterday, lol)

I’m ridiculously nervous about it. (which is ridiculous…it’s a CAKE for god’s sake — the world won’t stop spinning if I screw it up)

Wish me luck.

Reading and Watching Wednesday 1/20/10

I should never read books that are hyped because I’m always disappointed. I finished Kathryn Stockett’s THE HELP. It was okay. Better than okay, pretty good, but I didn’t think it was great like so many others seem to. I have a couple theories as to why, but I’m keeping them to myself.

On the other hand, I loved, loved, loved 50 FAVORITE ROOMS BY FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT by Diane Maddox. It’s a feast for the eyes, with the book being as well-designed as the rooms it honors.

We watched Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. An okay movie that suffers from what I call writer/director-itis. (I’m of the opinion that writers should never direct their own work.) Still it was entertaining (and one of Val Kilmer’s better performances imho) and if you’re a fan of Shane Black (which I am) there are some good laughs.

I’m thinking of re-reading some old Spenser novels this week. The passing of Robert Parker has left me feeling nostalgic.

What about you? Have you read or watched anything interesting?

RIP Robert B. Parker

Bummed about the passing about this prolific author.

While he’s best known for Spenser, it was always Hawk who held my attention.
