Reading and Watching Wednesday

Whatchya reading or watching?

Reading: I’ve officially given up on Toni Morrison’s “A Mercy”. Couldn’t get thru it. I haven’t started another novel yet.

Besides the newspaper (yes, I actually read a daily newspaper, how old school is that?) I’ve been reading magazines: The January issue of RWR (actually learned something from it this month) the Jan/Feb Issue of Cooking Light (saw a brunch recipe I can’t wait to try!) and the February issue of Runner’s World (loved the letter from the editor).

I’m also reading Jeff Vandermeer’s “Booklife: Strategies and Survival Tips for the 21st-Century Writer” Definitely an interesting take.

Watching: We’re watching Season 2 of Dexter on dvd. I don’t get why this show has such a rabid following. It’s okay, it’s even got a few really good moments, but overall it’s…okay, imho.

I’m not watching the Food Network since it’s no longer carried by my cable company. (Shhh! Don’t tell Long Suffering, but I’m secretly glad it’s gone. I despise Iron Chef and he tunes into it regularly.)

So tell me, what are you reading or watching?

  1. Hi,Jen. Have you read Shadow in the Wind by Carlos Luiz Zafon. It actually made my top 5 list of favorite books recently. Takes place in Barcelona. Very Dickens-like.Everyone I have loaned it to absolutely loves it.

    • Hi Tina!

No I haven’t read it. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it. Appreciate the recommendation!

  2. Shadow of the Wind is awesome–the translation into English is really well done. As an author/editor I thought a couple things could have been done differently, but despite that I still loved it.

I have nothing to read. 😦 I gave up on e-books–I just don’t enjoy them. I’m thinking of hitting the used English bookstore tomorrow to see if he has anything new I haven’t read. Slim pickings though.

And as for what I’m watching–brace yourself–season 35 of Another World, on YouTube. Because I exhausted Bonanza and they don’t seem to have Magnum PI. Plus, it seemed so Latin to watch a soap opera.

  3. I’m still reading my book about the FDA. Scary stuff. I’ve been watching “Life” [rented from Netflix] and really enjoying it and of course I feed my inner teen by catching iCarly whenever I can.

  4. Okay, two recommendations for the same book has no elevated it to the Must Find list. Thanks Tina and Kate!

Kate — maybe you’ll find a treasure at the bookstore. Good luck! Ooooh, who’s on season 35 of AW? Does this mean when a commercial comes on with a voice over and I yell out, “that’s Cass Winthrop!” that you’d actually understand what I mean?

Jennifer — I LOVED Life — probably my favorite show since Sorkin left The West Wing and was so pissed when they cancelled it.

    • LOL–you yell “Cass Winthrop!” and I’ll follow it up with singing the theme song. (I’ll refrain from quoting it now, knowing how susceptible you are to getting lyrics stuck in your head.)

  5. Kate — yes, I am susceptible to lyric-itis. Right now I’ve got the lyrics of A Fine Frenzy’s “Winter White” stuck in my head, which is unfortunate because it means I’m going around singing “Merry Christmas Happy Goddamn New Year”….
