Rewriting is like Colorforms

Tomorrow I’m giving my niece a set of Colorforms (it’s taken great self-control to not open and play with them). You remember Colorforms right? Little pieces of vinyl that stick to a board thru the magic of static cling?

Anyway, I’ve been eyeing the Colorforms and it occurred to me that rewriting (at least with the use of computers) is a lot like the toy. You can pick up a scene, or a line of dialogue, or an entire chapter, and try it out in different places until you get just the picture you want.

  1. You found Colorforms?? I miss them. They were so cool. Maybe that’s why I still do the cut-and-paste form of editing. I like taking a page apart [literally] and taping it back together. It’s easier for me to make changes that way than to move things around virtually. Must be by Colorform history.
