What’s cookin’ Tuesday – 1/19/10

Not much cooking here. The most interesting thing I made was a salmon melt (instead of a tuna melt). Since I added capers to this, we actually had a discussion about whether it’s even possible to put too many capers in a dish. (We LOVE capers) Long Suffering is of the opinion that it’s impossible.

I’ll be making a birthday cake this weekend. I’m wondering if I should try baking the cake part from scratch (I hate baking. Measuring rubs me the wrong way) or just use a box mix.

Have you, or do you know anyone who has, made a cake from scratch?

  1. I make cakes from scratch–I never buy mixes. I’m not only really loose about measuring but I substitute things too, like orange juice instead of oil, etc. They never turn out the same, but they always turn out well.

    Whose birthday is it?

  2. It’s Long Suffering’s bday. Hmmm…maybe I will tackle this cake thing. After all I’m covering it in homemade whipped cream, bananas, strawberries and chocolate and raspberry sauces, so even if the cake turns out badly, chances are no one will notice…right?

    • If you’re making it in a normal shape, line the pan with wax paper and it’ll come out easier. If you’re using a bundt pan, good luck. 😉 Also, save me a piece–it sounds yummy.

  3. It’ll be a normal shape since I’ve got to make layers. Should I grease the waxed paper???

  4. Nope. When you invert the pan and put the cake on a rack to cool, you just peel the wax paper off. My mom taught me that. It’s brilliant, really.

  5. I consider using a box mix to be ‘making a cake from scratch.’ It’s not from scratch if you buy it at the bakery. That’s how I roll. LOL.
