Writing Can Be Murder

I hate writing, I love having written.

I believe it was Dorothy Parker who said, “I hate writing, I love having written.” There are days when I live by that mantra.

I think people believe that people who write enjoy every moment in their make believe land. I don’t. Because here’s the thing…most of the time I’m not totally immersed in my world of make believe. It takes work to get there and it’s hard to stay there.

Unless I’m in flow. Time spent in flow (where, I must point out, there is no sense of time) truly is a joyful, wondrous state and has got to be some of the best moments of my life.

I also hate running, but I love having run. (assuming the aches and pains aren’t toooo bad afterward)

I also hate cleaning, but I love having a (relatively) clean home.

Before you go thinking I hate everything, you should know that there are some activities I enjoy in the moment. I like reading, singing, cooking, showering (okay I LOVE showering) visiting with family and friends (most of the time) and taking photographs.

What about you? What do you hate? What do you love having done?

  1. I ditto everything you said. Nothing is worse than sweating over a blank page. But nothing is more fulfilling than reading back what you finally managed to write.

  2. I ditto everything too. Those moments of flow are why I keep writing, trying to recapture them, but it’s a lot like trying to think yourself back in time [like the movie Somewhere in Time]. It’s so much work, worth it all, but the slightest thing can kick you back to reality in a heartbeat.

  3. Jenny — It’s only fulfilling if you actually like what you’ve written. There are soem days when it’s just total garbage, and others when it’s pure magic.

  4. Jennifer — Reality is so rude, isn’t it?
