Reading, watching, listening 6/30/10

Reading — I really enjoyed the pieces about Thomas Edison in last week’s issue of TIME (then again, I am strangely fascinated by Edison)

Watching — Could someone please explain how the hell Farscape stayed on the air for four seasons????

Listening — To the third Spellman book by Lisa Lutz.

What’s entertaining you this week?

What’s cookin’ Tuesday 6/29/10

I made mahi mahi for the first time. I didn’t particularly like it…then again, I don’t particularly like it when other people cook it either. Long Suffering did like it though so it wasn’t a total waste of time and energy.

Having a quinoa and chickpea salad for dinner. I’m not holding out much hope. I keep trying to like quinoa (it’s a perfect protein and all that). Anyone have any good quinoa suggestions/recipes?

Oh, and I discovered I like Apple Martinis.

Please tell you had something interesting this week.

10 Things I love

I’m not going to include specific people because then I’d just have to change the title to ten people I love.

These aren’t in any particular order:

1) Watching a thunderstorm blow in (better done outside so that you can feel all that energy)

2) Coffee (shocking, I know)

3) Fuchsia, Raspberry, Hot Pink — these are my happy colors

4) Starting a story — what a rush!

5) Finishing a story — what a relief!

6) Hot showers — no matter what the temp outside is. Everything’s better with a hot shower.

7) Paper — specifically blank journals/notebooks/pads — these are my crack

8) Walking in the woods

9) Getting lost in a good book

10) Indoor plants — green is good

Mall fight!

Picture this: Debbie Gibson and Tiffany brawling.

No, not in the mall. (The 80s were SO last century.)

But in a swamp! (could you get any more campily delish?!?!)

Coming to the Syfy station soon

Thursday Confession — 6/24/10

Confession is good for the soul…or some such crap, so I’m going to make that the theme of my Thursday posts.

Confession: I forget what I’ve written.

I was reminded of this particular character flaw when I rec’d a letter from an editor about one of my manuscripts. I literally had to reread MY OWN MANUSCRIPT in order to fully understand her letter which was about MY book.

(In my defense I’ve started three other books since I finished that one — my poor brain can only retain so much information at a time.)

Okay your turn, what do you have to confess?

Reading, Watching, Listening 6-23-10

Read —

Michael Tucker’s (yes, the guy from LA Law) FAMILY MEALS: Coming Together to Care for an Aging Parent — Read it just because he’s so freaking passionate about food.

A random book on running — not good enough to recommend

PEOPLE OF THE BOOK by Geraldine Brooks — Totally out of my usual realm, but I LOVED this novel.

Watched — The Blind Side — Surprised by how much I liked it.

Listening — Okay, this one requires the conversation that occurred last nght:

Long Suffering: You’re listening to Torchwood? It’s so depressing.

Me: You’re the one who downloaded the soundtrack to the mini-series. I bet if we listened to the music from the first season where all they did was have sex with random characters the music would be more cheerful.

What’s been entertaining you?

What’s cookin’ — Tuesday 6-22-10

Not the best of weeks in the kitchen.

I didn’t bake my bread long enough — gross! (This is the problem with baking whole wheat bread — it’s always brown and by the time the top browns you’ve burnt the rest.)

Yesterday I baked beets for the first time. Wrap them in foil. Stick ’em in the oven…what could be easier? EXCEPT….when you take them out of the oven bright red-purple juice drips everywhere (I’d been expecting them to be more potato-like) and the white dog laps up the juice…which means that not only do you have to clean the floor, but the dog too. ((sigh))

On the plus side I had an AWESOME cheeseburger this week (always so much better when someone else cooks!).

What did YOU have this week?

Top 10 Pet Peeves

I stole this idea from the brilliant Jennifer Hillier

Her list actually has some sort of order to it. Mine does not.

10. Reality shows that exist solely to illustrate what nasty, backstabbing jerks people can be.

9. Those damn misting machines in the supermarket that seem to wait until you’re reaching for produce to release their spray.

8. Idiots who zigzag in and out of traffic. Apparently they think they’re the only ones who need to get to their destination.

7. Motorcyclists who ride on the shoulder or btwn cars when there’s traffic. Drivers are supposed to watch out for motorcycles, but it’s perfectly okay for the bikers to break the law. WTF?

6. Calling an 800 number and having to listen to the same ad on an endless loop.

5. People who never shut up and then believe that they’re sterling conversationalists.

4. People who don’t bag their own groceries, then give the poor cashier a hard time, then pay with a check (which they haven’t even taken out by the time the cashier has put their bags in the cart).

3. Not being able to have a cup of decent coffee (for any reason).

2. Authors who don’t respect the rules of the reality they’ve created. If I ever meet JK Rowling I’m going to call her on this!! (like I’m sure she’ll care).

1. Smokers — anywhere…on the planet. Even the most considerate smokers reek…they just don’t know it.

So tell me, what are some of YOUR pet peeves?

I wave to people in costumes

Today I waved to the poor person desperately trying to get attention for a Pet Adoption drive.

It was 86 degrees out. I don’t even want to know how hot it was in the giant dog (no, NOT Clifford) costume.

My FAVORITE costumed folks to wave at are the one who dress up as drops of blood for the Blood Center. Strange things delight me.

What’s cookin? 6/15/10

I’m not sure whether it was because I hadn’t cooked the week before, or because I was inspired by a book I read (which I’ll tell you about tomorrow) but I cooked up a storm last week.

I cooked with dried TVP (textured vegetable protein) for the first time. I used it as a meat substitute in a chili (hardly original, but I wanted to start small). I found that I liked it better than the frozen stuff…it seemed to absorb the taste of the dish more.

I tried to recreate the roasted vegetables and goat cheese dish I’d had on the cruise. It was good, but was definitely missing something. I haven’t put my finger on what that is.

I baked a loaf of whole wheat bread. I hadn’t given bread a try in well over a decade (I could never get the kneading/rising thing down) but when I found a “no knead” recipe I gave it a try. Yum! It’s dense and yeasty and delish!

Even though I’m not a fan of pea soup, I made a chilled vegetarian version that was pretty good.

Long Suffering and I were split on the crustless quiche I made with red swiss chard, green and red bell pepper, leeks, and just the tiniest bit of goat cheese (seriously — about a tablespoon in the whole pie).

And I made my first key lime pie…okay, I made the filling of a key lime pie. I cheated and bought a graham cracker crust…and Long Suffering got a can of whipped cream, lol. But the filling was out of this world, lol.

What was on your plate this week?
