Writing Can Be Murder

In defense of adverbs and safe driving

I like adverbs (esp. when playing Scrabble — can you spell ka-ching?).

I know that most editors and writers do not (can you tell I’ve spent a good part of the last week listening to Stephen King’s ON WRITING?).

I LOVE the word “wryly”… “pumpernickelly” not so much.

Today I drove past a traffic sign in a work zone. Apparently they’re giving up on the old “Give us a BRAKE” signs (dunno why…they were SOOO clever — she said sarcastically).

The new signs are two parters. The bright orange sign says,

“Please Drive CAREFUL”

the next

“Our safety depends on it”

Personally I’d prefer “please drive carefulLY” or “please drive with care” but apparently adverbs have been banned from road signs…she said wryly.
