What’s cookin — Tuesday 7/13/10

The only thing memorable I ate this week was BAD. So bad that it was spit out, which I guess means it wasn’t really eaten.

What was this horrible food that passed my lips?

BAD, NASTY, MADE ME WANT TO PUKE — Marzipan. Who knew that almond paste could be so offensive?

And I thought it was bad that I somehow managed to forget to add both the honey and the raisins to my whole wheat banana muffins this week. Whoops! (Still, they turned out okay.)

This week’s loaf of whole wheat bread turned out okay too…even though I used a different flour and a different yeast, but that was only because I kneaded the hell out of it and added a bunch more flour in order to get the consistency to resemble something close to right.

For all those who have tried the watermelon feta salad, I’m glad you liked it. This week I added roasted almonds and strawberries. Quite surprised that the almonds didn’t add anything, but pleased to report the strawberries made a nice contrast to the watermelon.

So basically I had a week of food screw-ups. What about you? Did anything delectable or disastrous pass your lips?

  1. I made a very nice spaghetti sauce. I normally don’t make great spaghetti, but I let it simmer on the stove for a few hours and it turned out well.

I also made a good fried rice. It’s a great way to get rid of all kinds of crap in the fridge.

  2. Marzipan?? You hate marzipan??? OMG. Marzipan is the food of the Gods. I would walk through fire for marzipan, I kid you not.

That being said, the only food fun I had this week was making a really pretty dessert with blue jello, whipped cream and blue sugar sprinkles in a wine glass. It looked gorgeous. Okay, it tasted good too, but I think it mostly tasted good because it was so pretty.

  3. Jenny — what kind of oil do you use for your fried rice?

Jennifer — I LOVE marzipan…which was why I was so disappointed in the disgusting batch.

    What flavor is blue jello?

  4. Blue jello is raspberry. Can’t go wrong there. And blue jello was prominently featured on Stargate SG-1, so it has a special place in my heart.
