Writing Can Be Murder

Monday Mojo — Getting Started

Today is the official start date for my new novel. I’ve spent some time making notes and sketching out some scenes, but today the real work begins. My goals for the day is to chart out the main story and write a blurb (something similar to the couple of paragraphs you’d find on a book jacket).

The goals for the week are to chart out the novel, write a blurb, a synopsis, and the first 5000 words.

It’s also the start of my training for a half marathon I’m going to tackle in November. That means I need to get three Walk/Runs in…with my long distance day to be 5 miles.

Both of these are feeling a bit overwhelming, which is why I’m turning to this quote for inspiration:

“Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.”
E.L. Doctorow

What projects, big or small, are you tackling this week? And do they scare you?

ETA — Nothing helps productivity like having landscapers decide they have to work right outside your window for three hours straight. Dog of Death is helping by barking at them the entire time.

ETA — For the record the landscapers worked outside my window from 8:30 – 4:30…so much noise, so little concentration.

  1. Go Jen! Great goals, and I know you’ll hit every one.

My goal for this week: add 10,000 words to my new WIP which I’m not allowing myself to talk about. That’s a friggin’ huge goal for me, but I figure if I fall short, I’ll do pretty well, anyway. (And also work out 3 times this week. Got the first workout in today and already I want to die.)

  3. Starting a new book is exciting and scary all at once.

I’m on the other end of the spectrum: I want to finish the first draft of a book this week. I’m at the halfway point. I know I can finish it in the next eight days–I just need to apply myself.

  5. Yay for starting the new novel. I already can’t wait to read it.

My project for this week is a novella – which might turn into two novellas.
