Reading, Watching, Listening, Writing 8-18-10

Reading – Hiassin’s Star Island and re-reading Vandemeer’s Booklife

Watching –Top Shot — it’s a reality competition featuring marksman (and a markswoman) Learning lots of stuff about guns.

Listening — the theme from Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood is stuck in my head

Writing — wrote a piece of flash this wknd for a contest (flash fiction is very short fiction, in this case it was limited to 115 words — a 15 word “starter” or “prompt” plus my 100 words) The starter is bolded.

Tell me about whatever it is that’s kept you entertained this week…or flash me with your own piece from this starter.

A monster-slaying governess, a vampire librarian, and a professorial zombie walk into a bar…

The governess, sitting by herself, addressed the bartender. “Soda water, please.”

“We don’t serve your kind,” the bartender snarled.

“Don’t be such a bigot,” the librarian chided.

“Refusing her service is in violation of Prop ATE,” the zombie opined. “She has the freedom to eat or drink whoever or whatever she chooses.”

Growling his displeasure, the bartender slid water to the governess, a flute of blood to the librarian, and a snifter of brains to the zombie.

The zombie toasted the appalled governess. “To your health!”

“Don’t mind Lync,” the vampire whispered. “It’s that time of the month. Full moon tomorrow.”

  1. The contest was how I found your blog! It was fun to enter, and reading other entries kept me entertained. This was mine:
A monster-slaying governess, a vampire librarian, and a professorial zombie walk into a bar. Split personality disorder is a bitch. Slamming the Shirley Temple with tequila and eying her date she wondered why she’d shaved her legs. Hoping the night wasn’t lost, she smashed the glass over loser’s bald pate and hopped on top of the bar.
“Party Time!” She danced, someone lit the bar on fire, and a the volume went up. Girls joined in, a fight broke out.Heart pumping she spied prey. A leap and banshee screech made it all better as she pinned the band drummer to the wall.
    “My legs are shaved”
    “I suck blood.”
    Guys were easy.

I was taking a break from “real” writing this weekend. Bought 3 books, read 0. Spent family time and recharged. Now I am full speed ahead, typing one fingered around toddlers who think I should be doing other things. VERY ENTERTAINING.

  2. LOVE IT, Jen! The dialogue tags are awesome and I particularly enjoyed “opined”. Freaking funny.

Reading: Took a break from YOU SUCK to reread the HUNGER GAMES. Third book of the trilogy is coming next week and I want to be prepared.

Watching: Rented THE RUNAWAYS, CHLOE, and INTO THE WILD this week. All were actually pretty good, but obviously for very different reasons.

Listening: A lot of Joan Jett.

  3. Reading: one hundred pages into Anna Campbell’s CAPTIVE OF SIN. The story is good; the stepback is lame.

Watching: my feet flex under the covers of my hotel bed.

Listening: certainly not to Mr. Rogers. Right now it’s Dave Matthew wanting to be lovers tonight. Earlier, as I was writing, Air Supply had been loving me for so long.

Writing: Yes. 20 pages today. Hear me roar.

  4. Reading: The Island by Elin Hilderbrand and preparing to blog about why her books are a guilty pleasure for me.

Watching: Season 3 of Burn Notice from Netflix

Listening: to the joyous peace and quiet before my kids roll out of bed
